Spire and Jackson - Costume Class

Description

It was the fun day, the last day of our county fair. Jackson, my human, seemed extra excited as he opened the stall door, walking in with glistening, colored blobs on a plate and small, stick-like grooming tools. "Alright, Spire, It'll be a bit cold, but hold still." He had previously groomed me with odd vigor, and had sprayed me with two bottles - I hate the sprays. One keeps the flys away, though, I guess it's alright.
I watched him dip the thickest brush into the red-ish purple glob, and put it on my thigh. It was cold.
"Look! A sun!" He pointed to it. I chuckled at him in response, somewhat confused, and waited for Jackson to finish. I nuzzled him before the boy left my stall, and asked a woman who looked like him, most likely his dam - who was always around, even when he wasn't - accept at night - to put the paint on him.
They went into the tack stall, which was next to me. I watched curiously through bars as his mother did what he did to me.
Jackson changed into his chaps, a tank-top, and an odd split-skirt with elactic around the waist. Jackson never dressed like this - even when riding in the pasture. He walked in, his feet looked bare.
Jackson slipped on my halter and walked me from the stall, "Alright, time to let the paint dry."

The show ring came into view, and I held my head high and proud, knowing Jackson liked when I did this - I would always get a pat on the chest or a suttle kiss on my nose. He took me into the ring, walking in a circle - the other horses had on things too, some more intricate than others. The announcer asked us to trot; Jackson clucked, and began to run. I trotted along side him, trying my best to look good - everyone knew I looked good, but they needed to see it. The speaker came on again, and we slowed to a walk - then reversed. Jackson talked quietly to me as we circled around the ring, "Boy, do you look handsome in that paint. I'll tell ya, maybe we could do the paint at the barn, too."
I chuckled in agreement. The speaker came on, once again. Jackson led me to the center, lined up with other horses - I was the tallest there - and so was Jackson.
"Stand tall," he whispered, pushing my head up as he held to the clip.
I set my feet in line, like he always asked, and held my head high. A girl with a microphone came by.
"Hello!" she spoke into the mic, "Why don't you introduce yourself and your horse, and tell us your costume!"
Jackson smiled wide, "My name is Jackson, and this is my stallion, Spire. We are Native Americans ready for war!" He also spoke into the mic.
I wanted to, too, I leaned over his shoulder, and chuckled into the mic, the crowd, and Jackson laughed. I neighed in approval at the attention. The woman patted my shoulder, and went to the next contestant.

Jackson and I got first place - all thanks to my dazzling beauty and amazing personality. I got a treat afterwards... and a bath. The good comes with the bad, I guess.
